Enforcing use of mandatory profiles

If you've created mandatory profiles for some users and want them to use only those mandatory profiles, you need to configure the system such that if the mandatory profiles aren't available, the users won't be allowed to log on. That was the default configuration in NT 3.51, but in NT 4.0 you have to make some changes that include renaming the user profile folder to include the .man extension. Here's how:

  1. Start User Manager For Domains on the PDC.
  2. Select the user and click Profile.
  3. Check the user's User Profile Path.
  4. Start Explorer, move to the user's path and select his or her folder, press [F2] (to rename), type .man at the end of the folder name (e.g., user1.man), and press [Enter].
  5. Back in User Manager add .man to the profile path (e.g., \\<server>\<share>\user1.man).
  6. Close User Manager For Domains.

If a user for whom you've created a mandatory profile attempts a logon when the mandatory profile isn't available, that user will simply be out of luck!
