Access denied

Bookmark and Share

Suppose you'd like to deny everyone but administrators access to create new shares, thereby controlling who can access a computer from its network interface and the information that's shared over that interface. Here's a quick how-to.

  1. Run the Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
  2. Go to the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Shares.
  3. Select Shares and all its subkeys.
  4. On the Security menu, click Permissions.
  5. For Shares and each of its subkeys, grant the Everyone group and all untrusted domains Read permissions (at a maximum) and then click OK.

Note: Remember, editing the registry is risky, so make sure you have a verified backup before you begin.
