Quick disk safety nets for Windows 2000 upgrade

If you're making the move from Windows NT to Windows 2000, don't forget to take a few basic precautions. Upgrades can go wrong, and if that happens, you don't want to lose system configuration data. Although a particular peripheral device may be on the Windows HCL, you still need to be prepared for problems.

  • For Windows NT, you'll want to create an ERD (Emergency Repair Disk). You can do this by opening a DOS window, typing rdisk, and pressing [Enter].
  • For Windows 9x clients, create a fresh Windows startup disk. Just open Control Panel, double-click the Add/Remove Programs applet, click the Startup Disk tab, and finally select Create Disk. Follow the on-screen wizard to create a startup disk.

Depending on how far the upgrade to Windows 2000 proceeds, using the Startup Disk (for Windows 9x) or the ERD (for Windows NT) may be the easiest way to return to an operating system with little or no reinstallation/repair of the previous OS.
