Resetting license info

Licensing is an issue that can certainly create its fair share of administrative overload, particularly if you need to reset the licensing information when changing from per server to per seat. Remember also that you can make a one-time only change from per server to per seat, but you can never change from per seat to per server.

If you do need to reset the licensing information, you must delete or rename three files that are stored on the Primary Domain Controller or enterprise-licensing server. These files are:

  • Purchase history: Winnt\System32\Cpl.cfg
  • Connection history: Winnt\System32\LLS\Llsuser.lls
  • Group information: Winnt\System32\LLS\Llsmap.lls

These files are created when the License Manager service starts, so remember to first stop the License Logging Service (to stop a service, go to the Services icon in Control Panel).

The files will be recreated after you reboot and restart the License Logging Service.
